US Tax Records: A Wealth of Information – Heather Jenkins; Intermediate, Advanced; (Friday at 12:45 PM & Saturday at 12:45 PM)
There is a saying that there are two things certain in life: death and taxes. Tax records are full of treasures that can help any genealogist with their research. Our ancestors were taxed on a variety of things: personal property, real estate, and people. These records provide insight into our ancestor’s net worth, town’s economy, migration patterns, and family structures. Learn what records are available, how to find them, and how to read these often-overlooked gems.
United States Tax Records Workshop - Heather Jenkins; Intermediate, Advanced; (Friday at 2:00 PM & Saturday at 2:00 PM)
Tax records are one of the most under-utilized genealogy resources due to how difficult they can be to research. This workshop will provide a hands-on experience in finding these records. We will walk through three examples of tax records that will show different types of taxes, locations, and how they are organized. We will also walk through one case where the tax records are not digitized. Come and gain insight into our ancestor’s net worth, migration patterns, and family structures. If you are beginning with tax records, a basic genealogy tax record class like "US Tax Records: A Wealth of Information" is encouraged. The same class is taught BOTH days.
